Praktik Garden hotel, Barcelona, Spain: review | 17-07-2015

Click on the right of the above image for more photographs. The first to open of a small chain of mid-range hotels – each with a distinct character – is now the prettiest, thanks to a recent makeover. Though most of the rooms are bright and simple, the common areas are a blaze of colour, thanks to Barcelona's favourite hotel designer and übermaximalist, Lázaro Rosa-Violán. Read more: the best hotels in Barcelona Location 6/10 This part of the Eixample is not blessed with attractions, but neither is it saturated with tourists, and there are just enough bars and restaurants to keep it interesting, along with a stretch of great-value outlet shops for local designers and high-street brands. Style/character 8/10 The entrance and small lobby are wonderful, filled with plants and lined with books. The first floor is where it all happens, with the shady little garden that gives the hotel its name, along with a sunny indoor garden room and a tastefully eclectic lounge where guests can help themselves to excellent coffee. Service 7/10 Young staff on reception seem to be finding their feet but are perfectly affable, and can give information about the area. Rooms 5/10 Standard rooms are small and face an interior light well, but tall ceilings, white-washed walls and original features keep them cheerful. The beds are comfortable and the bathrooms spotless. If you can, it's worth spending extra on the first-floor rooms, which are much bigger and filled with quirky design features. Food & drink na/10 At the time of writing there was no restaurant, though there are plans to introduce breakfast at some point in the future. For now there are vending machines and free Nespresso in the lounge. Value for money 7/10 Double room from €66 (£49), excluding breakfast. Free Wi-Fi. Standard rooms are maybe a bit spartan, but are still a good deal out of season. Rates rise steeply at peak times. Access for guests with disabilities? One room is wheelchair-adapted. Family-friendly? Book in advance if you need a cot, and you may get upgraded to a larger Superior room. Children under 16 stay free.
